Calm Awareness
Stillness that knows God is God.
Calm awareness is not the absence of emotion; it is the steadiness of a soul that has remembered who God is. "Be still, and know that I am God" (Psalm 46:10, WEB) is an invitation to lower the shoulders before lowering the voice.
The mind set on the Spirit
Romans 8:6 says, "the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace." Calm is downstream of attention. What you keep turning toward, you become like.
Christ asleep in the storm
Mark 4:35-41 shows Jesus sleeping while the boat takes on water. His calm was not denial of the storm — it was confidence in His Father. The disciples woke Him in fear, and He stilled both the sea and them.
A breath, a verse, a name
When the chest tightens: inhale slowly, exhale slowly, and silently pray one short verse — "The Lord is my shepherd" — three times. This is not a technique. It is returning attention to the One who is already with you.
Scripture to sit with
- "Be still, and know that I am God…"— PSALM 46:10 (WEB)
- "You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you."— ISAIAH 26:3 (WEB)
- "In nothing be anxious… and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus."— PHILIPPIANS 4:6-7 (WEB)
A small practice
Set one quiet anchor in the day — three slow breaths, eyes closed, repeating Psalm 23:1. Do it before opening your phone in the morning.
A prayer
Lord, quiet the noise in me. Let me know You are God before I try to be anything. Amen.
